ON June 15th the How’s Business Popup Business Café arrives at Pocklington Arts Centre with free, expert and impartial advice for business owners and startups.

A variety of local business experts will be available and open to questions on topics such as tax, accountancy, finance, web design, social media and marketing.

’Everyone in business is in the business of marketing’’, says Louise Mason (right), whose first experience of a Popup Business Café was as an attendee. She has since returned to offer her own expertise.

‘’It sounds funny saying this as a marketer, but when I first started out, getting my business known wasn’t easy. I joined a co-working space and went to a lot of local networking groups which helped. The Popup was recommended as a great way to access advice and meet people. I attended one in Beverley and found it helpful asking questions on finance and accounting. For a lot of people that’s a big thing to have to do, it can be overwhelming and intimidating, but the experts I met were open, friendly and really approachable.’’

Having been running her own business – Your Marketing Specialist, for a year and a half, Louise has set herself an impressive goal – to help 1,000 businesses this year.

‘’It’s important to have a goal, it gives you more of a purpose and forces you to go bigger with your business. For me this goal is pushing me to increase my visibility and engage with more businesses.

‘’The problem with lots of marketing advice is that it’s very generic, it doesn’t always apply to your business, every business is different. I enjoy the 1-1 sessions in my job and the Popup Café seemed like a good extension of the marketing surgeries I usually run and of course will contribute to my goal to help 1000 businesses.

‘’ I’ll be on hand to offer advice on all aspects of marketing, based on what your individual business needs, whether it be as simple as setting up your social media to developing your overall marketing strategy.’’

Also on hand to share their expertise are Sam Hollis (centre), from Sam Hollis Web Design and Jane Frith (left) from Townend English Chartered Accountants.

‘’ I think the Popup Business Café will be a great opportunity for me to meet more businesses, offer my help and give them the tools to understand their online presence better themselves’’, says Sam.

‘’It’s a great way for local, small businesses to get advice without the usual daunting appointments, to share experience with people who’ve been through the same business problems and obtain reassuring advice that actually makes a difference’’, says Jane.

The event is organised by How’s Business, the growth hub for the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership. It is free to attend and you can drop in anytime between 9am and 1pm.
