Easing congestion in York and Harrogate and improving east to west connections through road and rail networks are the core outcomes we hope to achieve. Our Growth Deal has led to a number of projects which will support these goals.
Much of our area has broadband following the Super Fast North Yorkshire programme that has recently ended. We will now focus our attentions of the hardest to reach locations.
With our partners we are establishing a holistic, long-term transport strategy to maximise the economic benefit of improving our transport links. This will work in collaboration with the spatial planning process happening in parallel.
Enhancing transport links around York is a key priority for our LEP and we will be working with key partners on the dualling of the ring road, to ease congestion and support the York economy.
We will push the rail improvement plan forward, working closely on the plans for HS2 and ensuring electrification on our rail network happens sooner rather than late.

Improving Harrogate’s transport
Our work in Harrogate will enable more frequent trains to London and capacity for more trains between York, Harrogate and Leeds.
We’re also promoting growth and reducing travelling time locally by increasing the capacity and reducing congestion around junction 47 of the A1 for the A59.
The Bedale Bypass
A 5km bypass will take traffic from the A1 north of Bedale, making it easier to access Bedale and the Dales and reducing congestion in the town.
Maintaining our rural links
Between now and 2021 the LEP will be matching North Yorkshire County Council funding to establish a £50m fund for the maintenance of rural roads. The work will focus on priority areas, to ensure the condition of the roads that feed the centres of Catterick Garrison, Malton/Norton, Scarborough, Selby, Skipton, Harrogate, Northallerton and Thirsk are maintained.
Improving the links between York and Hull
Plans are in place to decrease congestion and unlock potential growth from east to west across our area, via an to upgrade to the A1079 between York and Hull, including dualling between Barmby moor and Wilberfoss.
Keeping the A645 from closing
Our investment will ensure this Newland Bridge remains open, protecting a major road, the A645, from closure having a significant impact on the economies of Hull and Goole. The bridge is also a key component in the transport links for Drax power station.
