Background:

Nationally, there was a record decrease in unemployment for younger people. Within York & North Yorkshire, the level of people registered on the alternative claimant count* increased across all age groups, but particularly younger people, with 16 to 19 year olds increasing by 149% between February and May, whilst the largest increase (227%) was seen in 20-24 year olds. The majority of young people now face an uncertain entry into the world of work.

*alternative claimant count refers to:  jobseeker’s allowance, universal credit and other Additional claimants

Our Pledge:

Young People and those furthest from the labour market are not left behind.

Our Actions:

  • Ensure local businesses and young people can access and benefit from the Government job creation schemes
  • Provision of information advice and guidance for Young People
  • Targeted campaigns to people and businesses to promote T levels, apprenticeships and vocational training.

Outcome:

Support for those disproportionately affected by the impact of COVID 19.
