The York & North Yorkshire LEP works closely with partners including the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to promote these many benefits.

However, our Labour Market Analysis 2021 for the region shows that apprenticeship start- ups have declined by 21% 2019/2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced many educational and training providers to close.

In the Government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’– a response to the economic crisis posed by the pandemic- the Chancellor announced a programme of support for businesses to encourage employers to engage with apprenticeships:

  • businesses that hire apprentices will benefit from a new payment of £2,000 per apprentice for those under the age of 25; and £1,500 for those aged 25 and over.
  • these incentives are available until 31st March 2021.
  • Also, this money is in addition to the existing £1,000 payment for new 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged under 25 with an Education, Health and Care plan.
  • Employers can use the incentive funding to help meet costs associated with supporting a new apprentice in their workplace: including facilities, uniforms, and apprentice travel.

Working in partnership with the ESFA and local businesses Aviva and Ellis Patents, the York & North Yorkshire LEP hosted an event in February to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week to showcase the benefits that businesses and apprentices can gain from apprenticeships.

As part of this event, the LEP launched an updated Employers Apprenticeship Toolkit. This is aimed at helping businesses understand how apprenticeships can be used to enable them to fill their skills gaps and achieve their growth aspirations.

Ellis Patents’ MD who presented at the LEP event also talked about how apprenticeships are vital for business success in the Yorkshire Post. How apprenticeships are vital for business success – York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (businessinspiredgrowth.com)
