Last call for business leaders to join our Board

14 May 2020

We are issuing a last call for business leaders who want to drive growth in York and across North Yorkshire to apply to join our main Board. Applications close on Sunday 24 May.

As an LEP our role is to shape future priorities, develop partnerships, and secure both public and private sector investment to deliver economic growth across the region. As the geographically largest, rural, LEP area in the UK, we aim to combine the region’s own unique innovation and industrial capabilities, with our own resources, knowledge and expertise to position the region as a prime proving ground for climate solutions and lead the nation’s transition to a carbon neutral, global power.

With 32,250 micro and small businesses, with less than 50 employees, making up 98.5 per cent of all businesses in the region, it has a diverse economy. We are looking for representatives from businesses in all sectors with a diversity of skills and experience and the drive, energy and passion to help build a better Yorkshire by increasing productivity and providing higher paid jobs.

Our Chair, David Kerfoot MBE DL, said: “The planet, the country and our region, at every level, everywhere you go, we are in a period of significant change. Now, more than ever, we invite leaders from our region and across all sectors, who live and breathe the world of business to embrace this opportunity to help us build a better Yorkshire for the future and deliver our vision.

We are seeking local business leaders, particularly those from SMEs, who can provide challenge and a more diverse perspective to our decision making. We encourage people from all walks of life, and all industries, to apply, even if they don’t have any prior board experience.”

Jane Lady Gibson, Board member, explains why she joined the Board: “I wanted to play a role in the support of York and North Yorkshire’s economy because it is such an interesting mix of villages, towns and cities, rural and coastal communities, big business and SMEs, many doing outstanding work.

Our Board understands that our future lies in our strong sense of identity; we are a huge part of the North’s global brand and our businesses and communities are shaped by our high quality places and has been for centuries. It’s important work, now more than ever.

The Board is very respectful of everybody’s role in the economy and no one voice dominates. It is a people focussed, results-driven board working with an excellent executive team, so it is very rewarding experience.”A minimum commitment of six days a year is required.  The closing date for applications to join the Board is Sunday 24 May.  Application packs are available at:
