Partnership working for ‘getting people back into work’21 October 2020
In July, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced a ‘plan to support, create and protect jobs’, building on the existing support offered by jobcentres.
On 2 September, the LEP hosted a webinar with the Education Skills Funding Agency to talk to businesses and key stakeholders on the financial incentives available to employers to stimulate jobs and skills. These included apprenticeships, traineeships, T Levels and also a ‘kick start’ initiative.
What is the scheme?
The new Kickstart Scheme is a £2 billion fund to create hundreds of thousands of high quality six month work placements aimed at those aged 16 to 24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long term unemployment. Funding available for each job will cover 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus the associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.
Working in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), Y&NY LEP organised a further webinar on 17 September for Local Authorities and organisations who were interested in becoming an intermediary to support the Kickstart scheme for businesses who were interested in taking on between one and 29 Kickstart placements. A list of interested intermediaries in York and North Yorkshire is now available on the .gov site and a further follow up meeting was organised with the DWP and stakeholders on 6 October, again with the aim of supporting business growth through Kickstart activity.
Attendee numbers: 37 attendees on the ESFA and 26 on the DWP Kickstart call.
A Plan to Reshape our Economy

Impact of the plan on reshaping the economy will be measured by successful delivery against the 10 pledges. Read the pledge stories on our news page here.
