Progress underway at our Scarborough TEC investment
With a fresh new look and consolidating its premises onto one site, Scarborough TEC is North Yorkshire’s newest further and Higher Education College. It’s recently benefitted from funding from the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership’s Skills Capital Fund. Progress is well underway with plans to become an internationally renowned centre for training in catering, hospitality and tourism.
The funding has already contributed to a variety of new training equipment and facilities for students with a brand new, dedicated construction and engineering building arriving in 2018.
Ann Hardy, Principal of Scarborough TEC, explained how some of the funding has been used and the college’s plans for the future:
“The LEP funding has been essential in enabling us to develop the premises at Filey Road. By the end of the development work we will have state-of-the-art kitchens and a fantastic restaurant for our hospitality and catering area.
“We aim to become an internationally renowned centre for the delivery of catering, hospitality and tourism programmes that meets the skills and development needs of the sector and this is a fantastic way for progressing these plans.”
“For the creative industries we have some superb computing and Mac facilities for the students, across a number of courses including games animation, design and music technology.
“By September 2018 we will also have a dedicated construction and engineering building which will enable the college to train students for the job opportunities available in Scarborough and the wider North Yorkshire area.
“None of this would have been possible without this funding and we will be eternally grateful to the LEP for everything they have done for us so far.”
Other facilities at the college include a theatre, hair and beauty salon, astro turf pitch, science labs and design studios.
The LEP were excited to see the swift progress at the new campus on our visit just six weeks after project start, with some students already using the college’s facilities. We look forward to visiting again next year when work is complete.
About Scarborough TEC
Scarborough TEC is part of the Grimsby Institute Group, one of the UK’s largest providers of secondary, further and higher education. The college recently rebranded from Yorkshire Coast College ahead of a campus relocation to the University of Hull’s campus on Filey Road in Scarborough.
With 173,358 new jobs expected in catering, hospitality and tourism in the UK over the next seven years, annual demand for filling replacement jobs of 136,671 and 31% of those positions considered ‘hard to fill’ because of current skills shortages in the industry, the rebrand has seen hospitality and catering become the college’s flagship area.
