The C-Team: Creating Change from the Inside-Out21 February 2019
Starting at the LEP in May last year, I came into the organisation with quite a big challenge ahead: creating a circular economy. This means moving from what we call a linear ‘take-make-dispose’ economy to one where we make the most of the materials and resources that we have, and products and systems are re-designed so that nothing of value is lost from the economy. Disrupting how the whole economy works is no small feat, and collaboration is critical.
That’s why, at the beginning of 2019, we decided to establish an internal, cross-cutting group – the ‘C-Team’. This is a group made up of representatives from across our infrastructure, skills, business and communications teams. The aim of the group is to create change from the inside-out. We’re going to be looking at how we can accelerate the shift towards the circular economy across all LEP activities and our influence . We’ve started by identifying some quick wins. These are small, simple things we can start doing now to ensure we’re leading by example:
- All meetings/Boards must be accessible by public transport
- Catering/food for meetings must be from sustainable sources
- No disposable/single use cups in the office or at our events
- Car sharing should be encouraged wherever possible as should the use of the EV pool car
- Limit printing and use of paper in the office as much as possible
The next step is mapping out our internal change levers, which are things that we can do to catalyse a movement towards a circular economy across our partners and areas of influence. For example, making circular economy principles a business case requirement for all project applications.
In doing this, we’ll be providing simple tools, templates and guides that other LEPs could start to use to direct investment and align partners on a pathway to creating a circular economy. Working in collaboration with other LEPs, this would provide an effective model to initiate local, circular activities and scale impact across the UK towards the circular economy.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the C-Team and the tools/templates/guides will be creating, please get in touch with Katie Thomas, our Low Carbon and Circular Economy Lead at [email protected]
Join us for our second Circular Economy stakeholder workshop which is taking place on the 4th April 2019. The workshop will be focused on co-creating an ambitious action plan for a ‘circular’ York and North Yorkshire. Link here.
