How are businesses from across our region being impacted by COVID-19? What are they doing differently to respond to the challenges presented and to keep their business afloat?

Supply chains and workforce

For most large businesses, currently activity is close to business as usual, with no current impact on their workforce from the virus. Foreign travel bans and homeworking wherever possible are key policy implications.

Some manufacturing businesses are reporting slight delays in supply chains from Italy and China. Brexit stockpiles are proving helpful to provide a continuation of supply for high demand produce, such as disinfectants and sanitisers.

Businesses with local supply chains are currently reporting no issues.

Big impacts

We are hearing that hospitality, tourism and creative businesses are finding it incredibly hard at this time as many have been forced to shut their doors to customers.  We will ensure that we provide advice on how these types of businesses can access government financial aid as soon as the information comes available. Visit our Growth Hub and Welcome to Yorkshire for advice or visit our own COVID-19 advice page.

Some businesses who are seeing demand increase are connecting with other businesses who are struggling to make use of their staff to offer secondment employment for their workforces. One example is O and 3 in Ripon, who has seen a large increase in orders and is reaching out to local networks to offer secondment opportunities.

Innovation and diversification

Some businesses have been quick to innovate and diversify. We have reports of numerous cafes, restaurants and grocers moving their businesses to a home delivery model. We also have news of many fitness businesses moving classes on line.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR INNOVATION STORIES WITH US SO THAT WE CAN INSPIRE OTHERS TO SEE POTENTIAL ADAPTATIONS TO THEIR OWN BUSINESSES. [email protected]
