David Dickson

Deputy Chair, Chair of Infrastructure Board

David is a Chartered Accountant and portfolio non-executive director, having previously worked in Leeds with one of the Big 4 firms, before joining Garbutt and Elliot, a regional firm of Chartered Accountants with a Head Office based in York where he was managing partner and Chair. David also served on the Board of Praxity, a worldwide association of accountants that employs 35,000 people and had a turnover of over $5 billion.

David left the firm in 2015 and expanded his interests in supporting our region, the third sector and advising family companies on succession strategies and good governance. David took up a number of non-executive roles in family companies and devoted more time to regional matters. He became the chair of the Shepherd Group shareholder committee, a role he held for 6 years until it recently passed onto a non-family member. David is an advisor to the Institute of Family Business and sit on its Taxation Group.

David previously chaired the Audit committee of the University of York and in 2007 became the University of York Treasurer, a post he held to 2019. During that time, David was also a member of the University of York Council and Court, a member of the Remuneration Committee and chaired the University Finance and Policy committee. David is still a member of the University of York Court and sits on the Advisory Board of Scarborough Coventry University.

David joined the Y&NY LEP Board in 2016 and chairs the Regional Infrastructure and Joint Assets Board. David has been a Deputy Chair of Y&NY LEP for 3 years and chairs the LEP’s Performance Board. These roles enable him to be involved in and visit all parts of our region in supporting sustainable, green and fair economic development.

David is a member of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund Advisory Board and advises regional and national bodies on funding, particularly for SMEs.

David’s work in the third sector includes acting as a trustee for a number of local and regional charities and including being the chair of St Leonards Hospice in York. David chairs the Yorkshire and Humber Hospice Chairs Group and sits on the Hospice UK Chairs Forum.

Outside these roles, David is a keen “fair weather “cyclist around our region.
